Back in the summer of this year, I asked my friend Eli Woods if he was interested in working on a music video together for one of the tracks on my upcoming album. Thankfully, he agreed. Eli is a fantastic visualist for live events and specializes in psychedelic circuit-bent analog manipulation and realtime manipulation with an emphasis on feedback loops. I knew whatever we came up with, it would work well.
We planned out the shoot over a few nights of beers and then got down to work on location in the Marin Headlands near San Francisco. We shot all the footage at a crisp 1080p 60fps (some of the shots were captured at 4k 30fps) and then manipulated all of the footage on analog video gear. Outside of some basic editing and blending techniques, there are no digital effects used in this music video.
We incorporated inspiration from the song’s lyrics into some of the creation process, emphasizing scan lines, visual bleed, and disintegration.
I could never find my place
Despite drawing in negative space
Color in the lines I trace
The old palettes bleed & scan lines race
You could never find your place
Exposing your film disintegrates
Contemplate your fall from grace
I wish I could reach to touch your face
